Introducing risk management into the grid

    Get PDF
Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are explicit statements about all expectations and obligations in the business partnership between customers and providers. They have been introduced in Grid computing to overcome the best effort approach, making the Grid more interesting for commercial applications. However, decisions on negotiation and system management still rely on static approaches, not reflecting the risk linked with decisions. The EC-funded project "AssessGrid" aims at introducing risk assessment and management as a novel decision paradigm into Grid computing. This paper gives a general motivation for risk management and presents the envisaged architecture of a "risk-aware" Grid middleware and Grid fabric, highlighting its functionality by means of three showcase scenarios

Codas in Leadership:An Exploration of Emic Perceptions within the American Deaf Community

In the Deaf community, hearing children of deaf adults (Codas) often find themselves in a dichotomy of difference and belonging. It is estimated that nearly 90% of children born to deaf parents are hearing (CACDP, 2006); furthermore, it is often assumed these children do not inherit the cultural identity of their parents based on their biosociality due to physical differences (Rabinow, 1996) and a binary framework of being either Deaf or hearing (Brueggemann, 2008). As adults, Codas may find professional opportunities related to the Deaf community such as interpreting, education, business, and advocacy. A recent flashpoint involving Coda leaders has revealed a growing divide between the American Deaf community and Coda leaders surrounding ethics, identity politics, and allyship. This study explores the perceptions of Codas in leadership positions within the Deaf community. Through a critical ethnographic study, I collected quantitative data through a questionnaire and qualitative data through semi-structured interviews to explore the perceptions of two groups: Deaf individuals and Coda individuals. The data revealed highly varied perceptions from the participants, including negative, positive, and divided perceptions of Coda leaders. Moreover, underlying factors such as ableism, capitalism, education, and other social factors may be contributing to these perceptions. Ultimately, this research provides data and recommendations for leaders in the Deaf community to achieve a praxis of common humanity, where Deaf people and their children unite and collaborate and find a way, as Humphries (2008) proposes, “...to move on from ‘How are we different?’ to ‘How are we being? (p. 41)”

    Incremental and Transitive Discrete Rotations

A discrete rotation algorithm can be apprehended as a parametric application f_αf\_\alpha from \ZZ[i] to \ZZ[i], whose resulting permutation ``looks like'' the map induced by an Euclidean rotation. For this kind of algorithm, to be incremental means to compute successively all the intermediate rotate d copies of an image for angles in-between 0 and a destination angle. The di scretized rotation consists in the composition of an Euclidean rotation with a discretization; the aim of this article is to describe an algorithm whic h computes incrementally a discretized rotation. The suggested method uses o nly integer arithmetic and does not compute any sine nor any cosine. More pr ecisely, its design relies on the analysis of the discretized rotation as a step function: the precise description of the discontinuities turns to be th e key ingredient that will make the resulting procedure optimally fast and e xact. A complete description of the incremental rotation process is provided, also this result may be useful in the specification of a consistent set of defin itions for discrete geometry
